Public Libraries Are Open – All Summer Long

Posted by Barb on July 14, 2010

When was the last time you were in your local public library? If it has been awhile, then summer is a great time for you to get reacquainted. There is so much to see, read, learn, and do. There is something for everyone. And best of all, it’s free!

As teachers, we can use the summer months exploring the shelves of books. Start with books that your students enjoy reading. These are the books that students have their noses buried in whenever they have a free moment. Students love it when their teachers can discuss reading materials they find interesting and not something they were assigned in class. Ask the librarian for recommendations, she is probably aware of which books come in and get checked out immediately.

Maybe you want to brush up on your computer skills. Often public libraries offer classes in their computer lab. You can learn basic word processing, desktop publishing, or photo editing. Classes are offered during the day as well as in the evenings.

Guest authors and local speakers have scheduled lectures that are open to anyone who wants to attend. You can also attend meetings for different interest groups for starving artists, inspiring writers, enthusiastic hobbyist. Public libraries usually have artwork displayed throughout the building. Take some time to stop and admire it and don’t forget to read the descriptions.

Have your young children take advantage of Story Hour. Depending on the program and the age of the children, you can often drop them off, giving you plenty of time to explore those shelves of books.

Check out the large DVD and CD collections. You will have the latest movie, music and even audio book releases. The loan period might only be a few days, but it can save you a lot of money. Mark it on your calendar when items need to be returned in order to avoid any late charges.

I encourage everyone in the family to get their own library card. This way you can check out the books you want to read, CDs you want to hear, and DVDs you want to watch.

The pubic library is a place you can read different genres, learn something new, pick up a new hobby, and meet new people. And with today’s economy, you can beat the price – free!
