 Vacation Souvenirs

Posted by Barb on August 4, 2010

It doesn’t seem to matter where you go on vacation, you want to bring back a little something from the place you visited. My eleven year old nephew decided he wanted an alligator head when we visited the Florida Keys. Needless to say, his mother who wasn’t on this trip, wasn’t too happy to see it when she unpacked his suitcase. In fact it didn’t take her too long to email me her thoughts, since I was the one who purchased it for him (although his Uncle Len was a big influence in picking it out). But I think finding the right souvenir, even if it is an alligator head, is well worthwhile.

Souvenirs are personal. Some a small, others you wear, and there are those that you hang on a wall or put on a shelf. But no matter what it is that you brought back from your trip, it puts a smile on your face each time you see it. There are days when you won’t look twice at it. But when you do stop to look at it or hold it, it brings back pleasant memories.

Souvenirs can start or be part of a collection. Some people like to collect a certain item from each place they travel. It might be a charm, T-shirt, or magnet depicting something special about that location. The list of collectable is endless. My sister is hoping that her son will not bring home any other persevered animals like his alligator head, but you never know….

Souvenirs are something you want to share or show off. You are proud of your purchase and can’t wait to tell anyone who will listen what it is, how you found it, and why you just had to have it. I’m hoping that my nephew’s family members, friends, future teachers (and girlfriends) will embrace his treasure and listen to the tale of the alligator head and his trip to the Keys with his aunt and uncle.

Even though souvenirs aren’t always the best way to spend our money, they do help us to remember those trips and the fun we had while away from home. So the next time you see someone’s souvenir, remember that it is important to him, even though it might not be your choice. After all, to each his own.
