 Calling All Sports Fans

Posted by Barb on January 12, 2012

The next time you head off to a sporting event or friend’s house to watch the big game, be sure to mention how the NCAA has teamed up with DonorsChoose.orgin a campaign called “Fund the Future”. This partnership allows educators during a commercial (of course) to start the conversation about ways their friends, family, and even strangers can help teachers throughout the United States by funding (or practically funding) classroom projects.

If you are not familiar with DonorsChoose.org you should be.  It is a unique site that allows classroom teachers to present ideas for projects, materials, or equipment to use with their students.  Then prospective donors read proposals and select where they want to contribute.  Once a teacher’s project is fully funded, the item(s) is purchased and shipped directly to the teacher.  Donors receive photos of the students using the item along with a personalize thank you note from the class.

So as you are talking with your sport-loving friends, mention how the NCAA and DonorsChoose.org are helping teachers.  Take a few minutes to explain how classroom teachers are often charged with making sure their students have 30-minutes of daily physical activity.  The problem is that many teachers don’t have equipment like jumpropes, kickballs, or hula-hoops for the students to use.  Making others aware of the problem is the first step.  The next step is giving non-educators a way to get involved to help, and DonorsChoose.org is one solution.

One thing I have learned about people who love sports is that they are generous and usually love kids.  They want to get involved in helping teachers, but don’t necessarily know how.  So point them in the right direction by sharing with them that both DonorsChoose.org and the NCAA’s Fund the Future campaign is easy and will leave donors with the satisfaction that they are helping to make a difference in today’s classrooms.
